Our Story

Historical notes

It is known that the word "Posta" originated in the second half of the 1700s, when the carriages carrying people and mail from city to city, passed and stopped in the centre of Perugia.

According to local knowledge, The Marquis Patrizi inherited this building from the Baglioni family who had lived here since 1490 and embellished it to the point of it becoming an appartamento di Parada, the highest example of luxury for the time.  It is assumed that after the Marquis was killed in the late 1700s the building was used as an inn.

Locanda della Posta has been the choice of many famous guests, such as Goethe and Frederick II of Prussia.

One of the greatest of Romanticism stayed at the Locanda in the year 1786, on his way to visiting Rome and its ruins. "Italian journey, part I, chapter 5": "Perugia October 25th 1786, evening. Federico II of Prussia

Also known as Frederick the Great, he was the third king of Prussia and one of the most important and representative characters of his time, embodying the eighteenth-century archetype of the enlightened monarch.

Wilhelm Heinse

Wilhelm Heinse was a German writer. The work upon which Heinse's fame mainly rests is Ardinghello und die glückseligen Inseln (1787), a novel set in XVI-century Italy throughout which he discuss his views on art and life.

Whilelm Humboldt

The philosopher Wilhelm von Humboldt and his wife Carolina were guests in November 1802. He worked as a Prussian officer, mainly with diplomatic tasks in France, until 1819. He also reformed the school system when he was Minister of Education (1809-1810).

Rossano Zezzos

Rossano Zezzos, famous writer and member of the Unione Commercianti of Milan. He wrote “Old hotels in green Umbria” in 1959.
